STORY:

This special edition Jean-Michel Basquiat basketball features (4) four select works, bringing Basquiat’s work to a new generation – through the art of sport. 

This basketball features four unique works by Basquiat from the period between 1982-1983. The collectible features “A Panel of Experts” (1982) which includes one of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s most instantly recognizable motifs, the three-point crown while also depicting nostalgic elements from youth. “Beat Bop 1” (1983) is another artwork featured on the ball which was the cover artwork for a song produced and released by Basquiat. In addition, the piece includes one untitled piece (Skull, 1983) and “Made in Japan 1” (1982) both which include facial features, including eyes represented in vivid detail true to the original work.

Jean-Michel Basquiat Lifeblood Basketball comes fully inflated in a special collector edition display box. This exclusive basketball, also sold at MoMA Design Stores worldwide, is an official men’s size (29.5) and weight.

THE ARTIST: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT

Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the best known artists of his generation and is widely considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His career in art spanned the late 1970s through the 1980s until his death in 1988, at the age of 27.

Basquiat works are edgy and raw, and through a bold sense of color and composition, he maintains a fine balance between seemingly contradictory forces such as control and spontaneity, menace and wit, urban imagery and primitivism. The Basquiat brand embodies the values and aspirations of young, international urban culture.

The conjunction of various media is an integral element of Basquiat's art. His paintings are typically covered with text and codes of all kinds: words, letters, numerals, pictograms, logos, map symbols, diagrams and more, and featured multi-panel paintings and individual canvases with exposed stretcher bars, the surface dense with writing, collage and imagery.
